On your marks for the Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run

Cllr Jenny Laing

One of my proudest moments as Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council came last year when I was the official starter for the inaugural Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run.

While the crowds before were about to take on a half-marathon, all I had to do was sound an air horn!

But that didn’t keep my heart from racing with excitement. To see people of all ages and abilities poised and ready to go was truly inspiring.

This wasn’t just the start of the race but of something potentially significant in the city’s history.

Aberdeen is being transformed physically, socially, economically and culturally. People are transforming their lives too.

2018 is the Year of an Active City and the Council is supporting a citywide campaign aimed at getting more people more active in the North-east. Led by the Active Aberdeen Partnership, it’s encouraging people to try sport and fitness activities.

The Council is committed to ensuring every community thrives, giving individuals the opportunities to prosper in whatever they do.

The Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run shows what people can achieve when they put their minds to it.

You can still sign up for this year’s event on August 26th. As well as the half-marathon there’s the 10k and the Family Run.

Big events bring people together and this fantastic run, with its iconic backdrop, serves as a celebration of our city and its people.

It may just be the start of something great for you too.
