Last week I had the pleasure of attending the official launch of Invest Aberdeen – this week we have seen the new inward investment hub in action.
The team has been formed as a joint venture between Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council with ambitious goals for attracting significant investment in the city region.
Last week’s launch event at Marischal Square was well received as the plans to take Invest Aberdeen onto the world stage, flying the flag for the north-east at key global events, were outlined.
Hot on the heels of that launch, the presence at the well-established ONS exhibition and conference in Stavanger demonstrated the opportunities that exist. Aberdeen was the only Scottish city region represented and to be front and centre in a key energy sector event is exactly where we want to be.
Invest Aberdeen is about far more than promotion – it is about the conversations that begin from this activity and the other high-level work of the specialist team members, who will be engaging with investors worldwide with the aim of underlining the growing offering we have and brokering deals that will supplement our own £1billion capital programme as a Council.
As was highlighted at the launch, more than £8bn of public and private infrastructure investment is in the pipeline to be delivered before 2030. That’s an impressive figure – but we cannot rest on our laurels and are pushing to use that transformation as a catalyst for further investment.
Investment and growth opportunities exist in the continue infrastructure development as well as in key sectors identified as part of the drive for diversification of the regional economy. As civic leaders we’re excited by the possibilities – Invest Aberdeen will be vital in taking that message, and the detail behind it, into boardrooms throughout Britain and far beyond.
There is a great deal of work to be done but an enormous amount of enthusiasm for the challenge ahead. I look forward to bringing further updates on the progress of Invest Aberdeen in the months ahead.
